ICE Physio Certified
Endurance Athlete Certification
Become the Premiere Provider for Runners, Cyclists, and Triathletes in Your Area!
Treating endurance athletes is incredibly rewarding, but can also be demanding. These patients hold high standards and expect the same from their providers. The ICE Physio Endurance Athlete Certification gives you the clinical tools to comprehensively serve every level, from the novice “couch-to-5K” runner or recreational cyclist to competitive and professional athletes.
The curriculum combines deep research-based online learning with hands-on live courses focused on video gait analysis and professional bike fitting. Graduates leave ready to sit at the top of any endurance athlete’s “must-have” provider list.
Why Choose the Endurance Athlete Certification?
Comprehensive
This is the single track for all your endurance athletes. You will learn to fit both road bikes and mountain bikes, and you will develop effective tools to analyze and manage both road and trail runners.
Clinical evaluation, video analysis, hands-on treatment, targeted exercise, and programming all collide throughout the series. You will leave with a clear, integrated system that includes:
- Structured clinical evaluation of the endurance athlete (history, load history, injury pattern, and red-flag screening)
- Video-based gait analysis for runners (road and trail considerations)
- Practical bike-fitting skills for road, tri, and mountain bikes
- Hands-on treatment techniques that address tissue capacity and movement quality
- Targeted therapeutic exercise and strength programming specifically for endurance athletes
- Load management and progressive return-to-sport / return-to-training frameworks
Resistance Training
Yes, you read that right. The old advice that endurance athletes should stay as far away from weights as possible is outdated.
Current evidence shows that thoughtful, well-dosed strength training decreases injury risk and improves performance in runners and cyclists. Benefits include better running economy, improved cycling efficiency, greater force production, enhanced late-session durability, and stronger tissue capacity to handle training load.
The key is how you incorporate loading. Random high-rep circuits or bodybuilding-style programs often create unnecessary fatigue without meaningful transfer. ICE teaches clinicians how to select the right exercises, doses, and progressions so strength work supports (rather than interferes with) the athlete’s sport-specific training. You’ll learn practical frameworks for integrating resistance training across different phases of the season and across different levels of athlete, from recreational to competitive.
There is no better place than ICE Physio to learn how to load endurance athletes intelligently.
Applicability
From your “couch to 5K” beginner to your seasoned Ironman, this course series arms you with principles that maximize outcomes across the entire spectrum of endurance athletes.
You will not leave with a single rigid protocol. Instead, you develop a flexible clinical reasoning system that adapts to the person in front of you, whether they are a new runner dealing with their first overuse injury, a master’s athlete managing bone stress concerns, a mountain biker with positional issues, or a triathlete balancing three disciplines. The same core tools (clinical evaluation, video analysis, hands-on treatment, targeted exercise, and programming) scale up or down depending on the athlete’s goals, training history, and constraints.
This principle-based approach is what allows graduates to confidently treat the wide variety of endurance athletes who walk through their doors.
Lifetime Access
Continuing education material can become outdated as research and clinical practice evolve. With ICE, once you complete the Endurance Athlete Certification, you retain permanent access to the course materials and all subsequent updates. There are no recurring fees and no need to repurchase content as the curriculum is refined. This ensures the frameworks and tools you learn remain current throughout your career.
Three Course Series
Course Curriculum and Requirements
The Endurance Athlete Certification is a three-course series:
1. Rehabilitation of the Injured Runner – Online (8 weeks)
A deep dive into the research and clinical reasoning required to manage running-related injuries while keeping athletes running whenever possible. Topics include:
- Epidemiology and etiology of running-related injuries
- Load management strategies
- Video gait analysis principles
- Tendinopathy management
- Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)
- Bone stress injuries
- Post-operative return to running
- Considerations for masters runners and youth athletes
- Practical tools: cadence manipulation, quiet-running drills, mirror training, forward-lean cues, and progressive exercise programming
Includes weekly live cohort meetings, case discussions, homework assignments (including video-based gait analysis), midterm, and final exam.
2. Rehabilitation of the Injured Runner – Live (2 days)
Hands-on application of the online material. Emphasis is placed on:
- Practical video gait analysis of injured runners
- Clinical evaluation and movement assessment
- Gait retraining strategies and cueing
- Strength and therapeutic exercise selection for runners
- Integration of manual therapy and exercise into a coherent plan
- Small-group lab work with real video cases
Following the live course, participants complete a virtual assessment that includes running gait analysis to demonstrate competence.
3. Professional Bike Fitting Certification (2 days)
A lab-heavy course designed to make clinicians confident and competent in performing a full clinical bike fit. Content covers:
- Epidemiology of cycling overuse injuries
- Anatomy of the bike and key adjustment points
- Full bike-fitting process (pedal/cleat, saddle, stem/handlebar, and overall position)
- Specific considerations for road bikes, tri bikes, and mountain bikes
- Identifying and addressing faulty cycling mechanics
- Integrating bike fit findings into a broader rehabilitation and loading plan
Substantial lab time ensures participants leave able to perform a complete bike fit. An in-person practical exam confirms competence in both road and mountain bike fits. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own bike (or arrange a local rental).
