Childhood Obesity

Bold & sweeping change in recommendations

“For children over 12 it is recommended to prescribe a drug to help them lose weight” – American Academy of Pediatrics

This podcast from The New York Times lays out bold and sweeping changes in recommendations from AAP that many will find disturbing including bariatric surgery as early as thirteen years old. Perhaps most frustrating is the acknowledgement that insurance will pay for the bariatric surgery but not for intensive behavioral counseling. Before you cry “over treatment” however do listen to the episode and appreciate that large scale studies have looked at behavioral/environmental modification alongside education and got no results which speaks to the complexity and challenge of this issue!

Obesity Take 2

Are physicians trained for the challenge?

“Doctors are taught very little about obesity in medical school, and even less about how to help those who have it”

This 6 minute listen from NPR is a tough reality check about the gap in training on board for physicians who are at the leading edge of this battle. We acknowledge that there isn’t room for everything in the curriculum, but considering the scale of this issue it seems more than a few hours should be allocated.

ACL Prevention

Different cues, different results

8-week, 3-arm, RCT looking at internal or external focus of attention during ACL tear “prevention” exercises & how kinematics changed as a result. Published in February 2023 JSCR

Internal focus example: “Land softly on the balls of your feet & bend your knee”
External focus example: “Hop over the cone in front of you, and touch the larger cone next to it with your hands”

External focus of attention group had significantly better performance when landing across the 8 week trial, utilizing greater degrees of hip flexion & knee flexion upon contact vs. locking their knee into extension. The external group also utilized more knee & hip external rotation musculature than the internal group.

Social Isolation

Making friends saves lives

The effects of loneliness and social isolation are devastating. This is an amazing resource from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center that definitely deserves to get passed around every healthcare clinic in the country, particularly those who serve older adults. Loads of info packed in here from recognizing social isolation to action steps to actually do something about it.
